Sponsorship for VITO Services via ESA’s NoR
On Terrascope, the standard capacity of a free VM is 4 cores and 8GB RAM and 80 GB HDD disk space. If you are working in a scientific context or in the frame of an ESA project and you need more capacity in terms of processing power, memory or storage, you can ask for sponsorship via ESA’s ‘Network of Resources’.
Network of Resources (NoR)
The Network of Resources (NoR) is an open, customer-centric network of EO applications bringing together European Earth observation Resources for data, software, applications and IT services. Combining operating and processing platforms, the NoR helps users procure services and outsource requirements while increasing the integration of earth observation data and information for scientific, social and larger economies. These resources accelerate the achievement of scientific objectives and the sharing of results.
The NoR initiative provides a sponsorship system for projects facilitated by the ‘EO Resource Tier Layer’ and the ‘Front-end Platform Service Layer’.
VITO Services on the NoR
Since 2020, users can request sponsorschip for the following Terrascope services via the NoR:
- Priority to Hadoop processing environment to improve the quality of large datasets and make large processing jobs more efficient
- OpenStack private cloud environment, to request for Virtual Machines with higher capacity
- Shared block storage for your virtual machines
- Long-term tape storage connected to the VITO platform
If your research work qualifies the criteria for ESA’s NoR Projects Sponsorship, you can request for VITO services through the NoR Discovery Portal.
After submitting the application form via NoR Discovery Portal, ESA steps in and renumerates successful applicants with a voucher for the selected services, allowing free consumption for research, product development and up to pre-commercial demonstration.
Commercial users
If you do not qualify for ESA Sponsorship, you can directly request/purchase these VITO services based on your needs and use your own funding.
